It was the middle of the day, normally not an ideal time for photography. So it was that my friend Steve (a keen photographer) and I headed out for a hike in the snow - without our cameras.  So, when we stumbled onto this marvelous scene of lines and shadows, a visual playground on the surface of a frozen lake we could only kick ourselves for being unprepared.  We deserve credit, however, for recognizing our mistake and running back to get our cameras: this was too good to pass up.

Yes, there is something obvious about shooting blades of grass, but never have I seen such a wonderfully abstract collection of lines, full of echoes of Picasso and de Kooning. I shot without thinking, just reacting to the shapes and patterns - running on instinct. We spent half an hour, simply playing with pure design, before the bitter cold drove us back to the cabin fireplace. This ended up my favorite from a several dozen I took during that brief, exhilarating session.
