View of Darien Wilderness from Pirre Mountain
Darien World Heritage Site, Panama
This is one of the most remote, and spectacular, corners of Central America. Rugged and wild, the Darien Gap confounded the builders of the Panamerican highway, which ends in this swampy jungle west of the Colombian border. There is continued pressure to complete the highway, which would threaten the pristine nature of this forest wilderness.
