Darwin's Fox (Pseudalopex fulvipes) Chiloe Island, CHILE

Critically Endangered

These small foxes are found only on Chiloe Island and in a single isolated patch of mainland forest in southern Chile - and nowhere else in the world.  There may be no more than a few hundred left in the wild for their temperate rainforest home is rapidly disappearing.

I spent five days looking for these small foxes and, in between almost constant downpours so typical of the region,  I had little more than an hour in their company.  It was an hour extraordinarily well-spent.
